A ball end mill is often referred to as a ball nose end mill. The end geometry is ground with a full corner radius equal to half of the tool diameter, and the edges are center cutting. They can be made from solid carbide or various compositions of high speed steel. They can be general purpose or high performance geometries. Ball nose end mill bits bits can be used used for a large corner radius, grooving with a full radius, and contour or profile milling. The smaller diameters can be used for engraving. Large diameters up to 2-1/2" in HSS. Ball end milling is often used in mold making applications.
